Yoga Tips for Beginners: What To Know Before Your First Yoga Class

If you’ve been thinking about getting into shape, you may have considered taking a yoga class. Yoga can be a great way to either get in shape or maintain your level of fitness. It builds strength and flexibility while simultaneously allowing you to focus on your breathing. By practicing yoga, you learn how to control your breathing, even during some rather challenging poses. This in turn helps you in virtually every other area of your life, as it allows you to remain calm and stay in control of your emotions. Yoga also helps you become more in tune with yourself. Therefore, you have the chance to reap both physical and mental benefits of practicing it.

Here are some top yoga tips for beginners:

That said, yoga can be intimidating for anyone who isn’t already familiar with it. Here, you will learn some basics about what it’s like to take a class and some basics of what you should know before you try your first class.

What Should You Wear?

There are two main things you’ll want to remember when it comes to understanding your first yoga class regarding clothing choices. The first is that you should wear something that allows you to be comfortable and move freely. However, make sure what you’re wearing isn’t too loose, as that might become an issue during certain poses - After all, you don’t want your shirt flying over your head during a down dog. Instead, choose something that will stay put without clinging to your body so tightly that it restricts your movement.

Should You Eat Before Class?

The answer to this question will largely depend on your diet and the time of day you are taking your class. You need to eat breakfast to kick-start your metabolism. However, you don’t want to eat a big breakfast and then go do an especially challenging yoga class immediately thereafter. Try eating something simple an hour or so before class that will give your body the energy it needs without adding a bunch of empty calories.

Will Yoga Work for Any Fitness Level?

When it comes to first yoga class tips, one of the most important things to remember is that it can be adapted to fit virtually any fitness level. There are advanced classes out there that will challenge even the fittest individuals. By the same token, there are classes for beginners and even some that are dedicated to older students. Your best course of action is to find out about the types of yoga classes available in your area so you can choose one that works for your specific needs, fitness level, and comfort zone. At Sunstone our classes are designed to accommodate both beginner and advanced students. Any of the classes you take can be scaled up or down to adapt to your level.

What Should You Bring to Class?

At Sunstone all you need to bring is a bottle for water; we provide you a sanitized mat and a fresh towel. You may also want to bring a change of close and use the locker room to shower and change.

Are There Different Types of Yoga Classes Available?

There are several different types of yoga. Hatha Yoga (Hot Yoga at Sunstone) is a great choice for beginners, especially if you aren’t accustomed to doing a lot of exercises or you have some issues with your mobility. It’s also a good option for older individuals who want to maintain flexibility without the challenges that come with some of the more advanced types of yoga. If you want something a bit more challenging, you may want to try Vinyasa Yoga (Flow). These classes focus on strength and flexibility while helping you build lean muscle.
