Classes Resume

Thank you for supporting our Sunstone community. Tomorrow, Monday, May 18th, we are resuming classes in the studio. Without committed community members like yourself, this would not be possible.

Rebuilding our community is going to take some time and cooperation as we navigate Covid-19 together. During the lockdown, your Sunstone Team members have been working hard to adapt to our new situation. Here is a sampling of the things we have been doing:

A Message on COVID-19

Cleanliness has always been a priority at SunstoneFIT. Our mats, equipment, and surfaces are cleaned with a safe, EPA-registered, PH-balanced, concentrated detergent that is pseudomonacidal, staphylocidal, salmonellacidal, fungicidal, and virucidal. We have always been especially vigilant about disinfecting our studios during cold and flu season, and with the recent spread of coronavirus COVID-19, we have redoubled our efforts at providing a clean environment. 

We are also working hard to keep class availability high so that classes are not crowded and our members have reasonable options for practicing with comfortable social distancing.

Having Trouble Losing Weight?

At Sunstone our members often ask our coaches to work with them on losing weight. Our coaches work with members to establish the right mindset around fitness and this extends to ‘losing weight’.  

Since language affects the way we think about a goal like ‘losing weight’, it is important that we clarify what we mean. When you tell your coach, ‘you want to lose weight’, do you mean you want to lose fat?

Mastering fundamental movements is key to taking control of your body and the first step in: 
  • Controlling your continued long-term ability to move well and pain-free
  • Your short-term ability to do the physical tasks you need and want to do
  • Improving your performance and building your body awareness in any class or program.

Why Hot Pilates? And More!

I am very excited for Sunstone to be offering Hot Pilates (previously called Metal)! The postures Sunstone offers in our Pilates series are dynamic movements that complement the more static nature of most of our yoga postures. The dynamic movements of Pilates challenge the muscles, cardiovascular system, and mind in new and complementary ways. In our hot yoga classes we generally (not always) get in a posture and hold a static position. In contrast in Pilates, we generally stabilize our ‘Pilates Core’ (abdomen, back, inner thighs and buttocks) and making a controlled but dynamic movement.

Born to Move

Since the recent NYT article “How yoga Can Wreck Your Body.” I have seen a number of comments on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and via email. On the one hand I was sad that yoga (in general) was getting bad press as I personally know of the positive effects it brings to many people’s lives. On the other hand I felt a sense of vindication for 10 years of standing strong on:
